In every human population, there are around 10% who have, or will, put helping others in need or at risk above their own safety (or own group identity). I am in awe of how much, and how often, so many sacrifice (to help even a few others – often unlike them). There are examples from all cultures, parts of the world, and history. I can only hope that there will be at least as many for us here, now, and in the future – and that we, too, can find the courage to do as so many others have done.

Courage is quite literally the time of the heart. Courage is not bravery, nor fearlessness, nor lacked in anyone. Courage is a decision. Follow your heart – especially when AFRAID (About Feeling Real And Imaginary Distress)!

People willing to help, rescue, or save others share certain common traits. They tend to be:

•	Decisive
•	Fast thinking
•	Risk Taking
•	Independent
•	Adventurous
•	Open-Hearted
•	Rebellious
•	Unusually Flexible
•	Able to switch plans, abandon habits, and change ingrained routines
– at a moment’s notice
•	Non-Conformist

They do not see themselves as heroic – even though they often truly are.

“I only did my duty.”
“I did it because it was the right thing to do.”
“If you can save someone else’s life, it is your duty to try.”

The world needs more people like this. Look for them. Be one of them.

That’s my perspective. What’s yours?

A hyphen-nation is one that keeps people permanently divided and focused on identifying (with) differences rather than commonalities.

A hyphen-nation can never really be a “nation” or a “people” with a distinct “nationality” as long as it discourages assimilation and integration of people – even if it insists on homogenization and standardization in all else.

The ideal of a “melting pot” was replaced by a “patchwork quilt” – that often seems unraveling. Emphasizing “diversity” – especially based on superficial appearance and “ancestry” – is detrimental to both individuals and countries. So is the idea that maintaining “multicultural” differences is more important than a united cohesive cooperative society. We are all unique – and thus inherently NOT “equal”. We should not pretend otherwise. We should also not forget that adding ingredients does not cause anyone or anything to lose their essence or individual identity – but does often improve the whole a result. We are holons – whole parts made up of whole parts. So is society.

Synergy requires contribution from all so that all are better together than apart. This is NOT the same as redistributive collectivism, communism, or socialism. The original meaning of “competition” was to bring out the best in both oneself and others. It was actually a form of cooperative collaboration and synergy. A hyphen weakens a nation – and is as unneeded as hen hype.

“A house divided against itself cannot stand.”
“United we Stand. Divided we fall”

There is a big difference between individual freedom, liberty, and personal expression and viewing everyone as a member of some subgroup (always in need of “representation”, “consideration”, special “rights” or “allowances”).

It is long past time to end “affirmative action” and attention to demographic differences – and instead focus on individuals (as more than just a member of some group they may or may not not identify with or consider themselves “belonging” to). It is time to think of each as one of “us” rather than not.

To anyone in Africa, an “African-American” is actually just an “American” – regardless of skin color. The same thinking is shared by most countries and cultures regarding whatever is added with a hyphen in front of “American”.

To call someone an African, European, or Asian, or even an American doesn’t really provide much meaningful information about them as an individual. Not everyone is the same – but we do not need to list everyone’s “differences” or make some more important than all others to identify ourselves or others.

Are Russians considered European, Asian, both – or neither and just Russian? India is in Asia – as is the Middle East. Are those in this region with very dark skin considered to be black, white, Asian, or require a label all their own?

Most Caucasians are not “white” – but we don’t label them Black-CaucAsians, or Red, Yellow, or Brown ones – the way some people hyphenate “Hispanic” (since simply speaking Spanish is apparently not considered colorful enough).

One of the reasons there are so many problems with the “European Union” is that there really is no such thing as a European! There are many differences between the people(s) living in each country on each “continent” – and often also between each region of each country (in the world).

Is there any benefit to dividing into smaller and smaller categories and all areas of the world and the populations in them based upon any number of “demographic” criteria? Only if we allow each (sub)group corresponding independence, autonomy, sovereignty, and self-determination – instead of having to belong to artificially created heterogenous “nation-states”.

The people of the United States of America are not the only “Americans” – just the only ones that usually use that term. The people of Mexico are also not only “Americans” but also live in Untied States – even without crossing their northern border. Canadians are also “Americans”. So are the people of all the countries south of Mexico – possibly even including of all those living on islands. Puerto Ricans are Americans citizens – as are those living in the U.S. Virgin Islands. “Americans” also live on many islands in the Pacific = and not just in the State of Hawaii. Guam, American Samoa, and Northern Mariana Islands are the best known American (occupied or administered) “territories” – but far from all of them. The U.S. restricts most “American” travel to Cuba – especially to the American military base (detention facility) overlooking Guantanamo Bay (unless being sent from the “American” areas of Iraq or Afghanistan). The Canal Zone of Panama was until recently “American” – as still are many other “zones” and “territories” . The list of former “territories” once “belonging” to the United States is quite long.

If we want the term “American” to mean more than just someone living on one of two western continents or resident of territory somehow “belonging” to the United States Government, we would be wise to not hyphenate our identities and accept each other as more than members of smaller special interest groups in need of specification for identification in a hyphen-nation.

That’s my perspective. What’s yours?

What are you known for? By who? How and how well are you known?

WHAT you know, WHO you know, and WHAT you know about WHO sometimes matters less than WHO knows WHAT about YOU and WHY.

Knowledge is not power – but how what is known is used by who can be.

KNOWING and KNOWING ABOUT someone or something are NOT the same.

Few people really know anyone or anything well – especially from extensive personal experience; mostly they just “know” ABOUT what they were taught, told, or read and remembered. We are said to live in an Age of Information; not one of Knowledge or Wisdom – and certainly not Privacy and Anonymity.

Data is not the same as information nor information the same as knowledge. Knowledge is not the same as wisdom. Wisdom starts with knowing thyself.

To know me may not be to love me, but at least be open to the possibility!

Isn’t it time you knew me – and what many probably already do ABOUT you?

Most of what is known ABOUT us by anyone that we have not personally told or do not have some kind of shared experience or known relationship comes from Public Records, Financial Activity, and the Internet – especially anything posted by or about us on Social Media Networks and any personal websites.

How big is YOUR Electronic Footprint? How accurate is it? Look yourself up!

Search by name, phone number, email address, and social security number.

Even if you don’t, employers, lenders, creditors, insurers, nosey neighbors, curious daters, government, news, and law enforcement agencies often do.

There are also many companies that collect and consolidate personal “public” information about us from various sources. Below are some that are known:

Even those who do not KNOW us may (be able to) know quite a bit ABOUT us (that even we may not know – is known – or be able to find out from them).

Businesses often want to be better known in ways that increase profitability. Individuals generally prefer positive personal and professional reputations. While what others think may not be any of our business, it can be useful to know and correct what information others have and may share about us.

While it is possible to challenge, correct, or control some records, and “opt out” of individual sites, it is virtually impossible to even know all the places information about us is available in the virtual world we live in. Those who come closest usually limit, manage, and conceal what is known about them by carefully creating and utilizing multiple structured corporate entities.

Internet searches, sites visited, financial transactions, email, and cell phone usage are monitored, tracked, and analyzed by marketers and governments.

Unless you are “undocumented”, only deal in cash, and go to great trouble to conceal your identity, interactions, and activity, it is likely that far more than you might expect may be regarded as “public” information – available to all.

If you’re going to be known anyway, at least try to make a good impression.

That’s my perspective. What’s yours?

Don’t just be a lurker and try to hide. Share some of your thoughts below.

Life often seems to throw things at us – perhaps to let us know we’re still alive. How we perceive and react to these things is a choice.

Life always offers (at least three) options. We may choose from the (three) most obvious options, create one(s) of our own, or refuse to choose – which is actually a choice in itself (to not actively select, reject, or create an alternative, but, instead, to passively accept whatever we get).

If something is thrown at us, we have three options: catch it, move out of the way, or let it hit you.

If we catch something, we have three options: keep it, drop it, or throw it back.

If we keep something, we have three options: use it (wisely for our own or someone else’s benefit), misuse or abuse it (to the detriment of ourselves or others), or lose it (through insufficient appreciation and attention).

If we drop it, lose it, or move out of the way, any options or opportunities may no longer apply – but others most certainly will.

If we throw something back, we are providing three options: that what was thrown not be again, that it be thrown again, or that something else be thrown (instead).

If we let something hit us, it usually means one of three things: we weren’t paying attention, we don’t perceive it to require a reaction or response, or we want it to.

Every option offers more. Life itself is an option and mainly about choices and decisions.

The number of options available at any time may vary but even to accept or reject, and to live or die are options. Between perceived mutually exclusive polar extremes are usually many other options – including (or integrating) both or neither.

Today, like all others, is the start of a new year. When beginning anything, the idea is usually also to be gaining something. Initiative can be good – but is better when it also includes finishitive. It’s very seldom enough to just initiate; we usually must also “integrate” – far more than just (what is and is not taught in and outside of) public schools.

Each anniversary marks not just another year past, but also one year closer to our (impending) death. Our expiration is not a one-time event (at the end of life); it is an ongoing process (from the start as a major part of life – just like growth, evolution, and transformation). While we do not stay the same, grow OR die is a false paradigm. We often grow AND die simultaneously.

The opposite of expiration is inspiration. To inspire also means to inhale or breath in. Expiration is essentially our last exhalation. How much or often we conspire and perspire is optional, but if we do not regularly inspire we will very soon expire. No need to hyperventilate. Just breath – often and deeply.

Hale is a word that means both whole and health. Whole health care is often referred to as holistic. To (be) in-hale would seem to be much more desirable than ex-hale. The word hale not only hails the relationship of health to wholeness but also the idea of holons – or whole parts of a greater whole (composed of parts). Life is essentially time, relationships, and the stories we tell ourselves and others (mainly about the other two). Our life story is composed of many stories and all are holons within the greater story of all life. The most meaningful stories are usually those that touch the heart.

The first organ to develop after conception (and start of life) is the heart. The heart is more than a pump (of blood, oxygen, and sugar); it is also the prime source of and connection to our vibratory energy in motion – our e-motions. Without motion there is no life. Prime the pump of life. Breathe – deeply!

Life outside the womb begins with the first breath. Our heart cannot beat for long if we don’t breath – and resume regular respiration. Respiration requires both inhalation and exhalation, inspiration and expiration. Breath in; breath out. If possible, live long and prosper. Just don’t hold your breath trying.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take – or hold. Expiration may be inevitable, but is ongoing inspiration and aspiration that keeps us alive – physically and emotionally. We give the breath of life each and every time we inspire (ourselves or others). Those who do not inhale lose some life in the process. Holding one’s breath or not breathing at all taking breaths away and leaves us breathless. Breath-taking moments are not nearly as desirable as those that make us breath deeply, fully, and profoundly.

May the year(s) to come be filled with many moments that fill your lungs, your heart, your mind, your time, your relationships, and your stories with life. Breathe – and share your inspiration, perspective, and comments below.

Despite common claims to the contrary, “content” is NOT king, queen, or even a royal pain. More important than conTENT is conTEXT – and how the content is used. Content can be anything – of any quantity or quality – yet even the “ideal” amount of the “best” content only really “matters” or has “value” (at all) in regard to circumstance and application. This is especially true when the content is information (to be communicated).

Information (alone) is NOT power. Simply “having” or “knowing” (no matter what it may be) is not enough. The same is true regarding “potential”. Most “information” isn’t even really information; it’s just data. Information should not be confused with wisdom, action, or results, nor any of them with power.

Information is literally “in formation” and often changes – especially in how it is interpreted, understood, and acted upon. Some information is considered “timeless”. Other information is “time sensitive” and only relevant or useful for a particular period – after which it could actually be better NOT knowing.

The urge to seek, acquire, or share new, additional, or better information is constant – but not necessarily urgent. An “emergency” is “emergent”. What “emerges” depends upon what people do or do not do. So much information is “available” that many people suffer from “information overload”. Just as who knows you may matter more than who or what you know, what you do with what you know usually matters more than what or how much you know.

Although information is NOT really either a “currency” or a “commodity”, it is often “packaged” and sold (like a product and or service). The actual “cost”, “benefit”, and/or “worth” of information has no correlation with the monetary “value” it is exchanged for. Those selling information often arbitrarily change how much they ask for or will accept – and treat information independently from its use. It is NOT information people want (or pay for); it is what (they think) the information will do – when it is used (for them or against another).

It is often claimed that words are only 7% of communication – yet the words we use (especially when talking to ourselves) affect how we think, feel, act, and react. Sometimes simply changing words can change what we perceive – and thus what we (can and will) receive. Some antics are more than merely semantics, but the meaning of words matters – and can affect both behavior and the benefit (or lack thereof) we and/or others may achieve as a result.

Many people are not content to merely share (informational) “content” – and want to “cover” it (all). To cover means to hide, conceal, and protect. Rather than allowing (full) access, “covering” anything actually does the opposite. To dis-cover reveals, exposes, and makes content(s) available – allowing those shared with to find their own meanings, uses, benefits, and values in context.

That’s my perspective. What’s yours?

Please share some informational content below – allowing others to discover something they did not know (about you, themselves, or something I wrote).

For things to change, first we must change – the value perceived.

Change is constant – even if it’s often irregular and unpredictable.

Ironically, the more some things change, the more they may seem the same.

A value we believe in may have little relationship with the value that others perceive we have (to offer) for them. Some values change; others do not. The same is true for beliefs – both of ours and those of others.

“If my life is of no value to my friends, it is of none to myself.”
~ Joseph Smith, Jr.

Changing friends might be an option – often thought of first by some.
So might be changing oneself, changing meanings, and changing minds.

To thine own self be true!

Change, growth, evolution, transformation, and transcendence don’t negate maintaining integrity. Our truth is relative and what is true for us now may not be later – just as what once was no longer is. An easy example is that what was true for us when we were younger is often no longer still true, for or about us – not only because we have a different perspective, but because we no longer are who and how we once were. Anything we once were or once did but no longer are or do is essentially only true in the past and not true in the present. Likewise, what is true for and about us now may not be so in the future.

Wanting one’s life to matter and make a positive difference (recognized and appreciated by others) is probably among most people’s deepest desires.

Showing others (our) kindness MIGHT be perceived as of “value” by some, but is actually beyond our control – yet is certainly “worth” doing even if it’s not “accepted”, acknowledged, or “validated”.

Expression and fulfillment do not “have to” involve others, but a life of “service” (and sometimes “sacrifice” tends to be more “rewarding” (for all) than merely living for oneself. It is also often a form of love.

A value is what we consider important – and can differ from person to person and at different times. I agree with you that staying “true” to our value is important – no matter how others react. I also believe that our value is greater when it is shared.

Finally, regarding how we (and our truth) are perceived. Consider the story of the Three Blind Men And The Elephant. The limited part of the elephant that each man touched and knew was both true and not true regarding what an elephant is. Even the elephant is limited in his self-knowledge. Each has only their own experience to go on – and that may change over time.

If I hold up a piece of paper that is different colors on each side, we may each claim that what we see is the “correct” color – and we would each be “right” and yet so would neither of us be regarding what we could not (also) see. I hope this helps put the Joseph Smith, Jr.’s quote in perspective.

I don’t really know what Joseph was thinking or meant regarding value. I found it an interesting quote and concept to consider – and am sharing my CURRENT thoughts about it.

That’s my perspective. What’s yours?

Although we are all different, and each unique, sacred, and holy (as a result), nobody starts out as an “original”. Neither does anything else – including ideas. Nothing is ever really created or completely “new”.

All that we are, have, (can) do, and know is based on what came before.

The man is most original who can adapt from the greatest number of sources.
~ Thomas Carlyle

Everything is essentially a “remix” or variation of an already existing model or theme. Creativity and innovation is seldom about adding more pieces – but connecting, uniting, and integrating until something new emerges (and functions better). Innovation starts with appreciating your assets and then combining, refining, and redefining – “upcycling” from “cradle to cradle”.

Innovation does not occur in a vacuum. Creation requires input, influence, and a frame of reference. Content requires context. Only them can individual ingredients be utilized or understood (as holons – whole parts of the whole).

Before we evolve, we learn and grow by copying. We can’t produce anything new until we are fluent in the language of our domain. We need copying to build a foundation of knowledge and understanding. Then we can synergize.

The 3 Major Elements of Creativity:

1. Copy
2. Transform
3. Combine.

<bk>
A few ways to start thinking more creatively include:

* defining the purpose and intent
* masterminding and brainstorming
* using both divergent and convergent thinking
* asking both open (fishing) and closed (shooting) questions
* using provocation, extraction, and random entry
* exploring and organizing possibilities and alternatives
* considering what believed to wrong, false, or impossible
* speculating and asking what if
* using parallel lateral thinking – and experimentation
* changing criteria or value selection (hierarchy)
* looking from multiple perspectives
* systematically switch (all 6) thinking hats
* gathering additional information
* allowing emotional and intuitive responses
* looking for patterns and relationships
* looking for similarity and difference (compare and contrast)
* zooming in and zooming out (increasing or decreasing scope)
* categorizing and uncategorizing (generalities and exceptions)
* considering cause and effect, requirements and results
* inverting (turning things inside out) or reversing
* developing analogies
* extrapolating and transferring concepts and principles
* building upon and extending
* oversimplifying
* differentiating and integrating aspects and options

Whether it’s problem solving, conflict resolution, design, or just exploration, using the above “secrets” should increase your creativity and innovation.

That’s the Pardes Perspective. What’s yours?

It seems increasingly common today for people unhappy with life or their situation to BLAME – Because Losers Always Make Excuses. This seems just as true in people’s personal lives as it is in politics.

Even many “successful” people with “positive” attitudes seem to BLAME those not as “successful” as they are for not assuming “responsibility” – for their values, choices, actions, and results (apparently assuming we all have complete, or at least considerable, control over our options and outcomes).

If our Emergency Medical System thought like this, then very few would ever be helped. Those in need of “outside assistance” obviously “failed” to prevent their illnesses or injuries – and don’t seem to be taking “full responsibility” to care for themselves (on their own). If their lives were “important enough” to them, shouldn’t they regain consciousness, start breathing, and stop bleeding on their own? Many people “treated” for a “complaint” don’t even (ever) pay at all, let alone in advance, for the “aid” they seek, need, and receive (first).

None of us may be “entitled” to anything in life, yet why deny those in need?

ALL of us benefit(ed) from and REQUIRE(D) input and assistance from others (often on an ongoing basis throughout our lives). Often the best way to help ourselves is to help others – who may not even know what they really need.

Those who BLAME put those who merely complain to shame. The BLAME Game is usually one in which no one can win. Excuses and finger-pointing tends to result in lose-lose-lose for all. Affixing BLAME doesn’t fix problems.

Whatever perceived problems exist always seem to be someone else’s fault (as if the person blaming had no more responsibility than for an earthquake). The only solution or action proposed to change things is usually to punish or get rid of the individual(s) or group accused of being “accountable” for all ills, errors, injustices, and inequities. Being “responsible” does NOT mean simply assuming or being assigned credit or BLAME; it means the ability to respond.

The best response is NOT to affix BLAME (especially elsewhere), but simply change, correct, and/or fix what we can, as best we can, whenever we can.

Don’t BLAME! Don’t be a Loser! Be a Learner helping others WIN with you!

To WIN, reach out, respond, and help others – and do whatever you can, whenever you can, for whomever you can, to make the world better for all.

That’s my perspective. What’s yours?
